How modern IT architectures are moving beyond network visibility

By Vladimir Yordanov, Senior Director Solutions Engineering, Asia Pacific, Gigamon

There is a lot at stake when an organisation migrates from on-premises networks to the cloud.

Dealing with multiple cloud providers makes it difficult to identify security threats and performance bottlenecks and troubleshoot issues. Moreover, enterprises and service providers must contend with an increasingly dangerous threat landscape.

Omdia’s Network Monitoring Market Report discusses how visibility fabrics and deep observability pipelines are foundational to ensuring consistent and pervasive visibility across the entire hybrid environment and need to be considered early into the cloud migration process.

“The report confirms that deep observability capabilities are essential for any modern hybrid architecture, in which increased cloud migration, strong security posture, and improving efficiency with network and security tool costs must be simultaneously realised,” says my company’s director of product marketing, Darshan Shah.

Leveraging network packet-level visibility

In the report, Omdia explains that suppliers are seeing strong demand from customers to leverage network packet-level visibility for various cloud use cases, including:

#   Accelerating and managing the risks of cloud workload migration

#    Extending on-premises-level security and compliance to the cloud

#    Reducing cloud complexity and costs

#    Aggregating and transforming all data in motion (from network packets to applications) for better monitoring, especially in hybrid cloud environments.

The Omdia report highlights how organisations that leverage visibility fabrics can dramatically reduce the amount of traffic being sent to their security and performance tools, thereby reducing network monitoring costs.

For service providers, the report further suggests investing in network monitoring to support 5G rollouts. With enhanced visibility into the packet core of mobile networks, operators can better leverage their existing monitoring solutions and improve the quality of experience of their customers.

The ideal vendor, according to the report, will have evolved their solutions beyond just basic packet capture and filtering. Their solutions must be able to aggregate and transform all data in motion for better monitoring, especially in hybrid cloud environments. Solutions for the 5G market must also support encryption and CUPS.

Omdia’s Principal Analyst, Telco IT and Operations advises: “Visibility fabrics are foundational to ensuring consistent and pervasive visibility across the entire hybrid environment and need to be considered early in the cloud migration process.”

His organisation’s report highlights the full picture of modern network monitoring and how my company delivers the deep observability essential for ensuring a secure and high-performing hybrid cloud network.

The new Network Tool Efficiency Wizard shows how network and security tools sprawl and future tool spend can be minimised. The wizard responds with answers to the following three questions:

  1. How do you rank networking and security priorities?
  2. How much network traffic do you send to your tools?
  3. What is your annual network growth rate.
